Starting in 1937, he worked for Baltimore radio station WBAL as an announcer, writer, and actor/comedian. He used his birth name until 1940, when, while on the air announcing Club Matinee hosted by Ransom Sherman at NBC, Chicago, Sherman held a radio contest to find a more easily pronounceable one. "Garry Moore" was the winning entry, which was submitted by a woman from Pittsburgh who received a prize of $100.[5] It was on Club Matinee where he met his long-time friend and broadcasting partner, Durward Kirby. In the years that followed, Moore appeared on numerous network radio shows. He started out as an announcer and then as support for broadcast personalities, one of whom was Jimmy Durante.

Under Paley's guidance, CBS would first become one of the largest radio networks in the United States and then one of the big three American broadcast television networks. In 1974, CBS dropped its full name and became known simply as CBS, Inc. The Westinghouse Electric Corporation acquired the network in 1995 and eventually adopted the name of the company it had bought to become CBS Corporation. In 2000, CBS came under the control of Viacom, which coincidentally had begun as a spin-off of CBS in 1971. In late 2005, Viacom split itself and reestablished CBS Corporation with the CBS television network at its core. Calvin Coolidge became President upon the death of Warren Harding. He had a reputation as a man of integrity and helped to restore confidence in the office of the Presidency following the scandals that dogged the Harding administration. Coolidge addressed Congress when it reconvened on December 6, 1923, and gave a speech that echoed many of Harding's themes. The speech was the first Presidential speech to be broadcast to the nation over the radio.

James Ameche (August 6, 1915, Kenosha, Wisconsin – February 4, 1983, Tucson, Arizona) was a familiar voice on radio, including his role as radio's original Jack Armstrong on Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy. When his older brother, Don Ameche, left his position as the host and announcer for The Chase and Sanborn Hour in the early 1940s, Jim took over for the remainder of the show's run. He also was heard as mountie Jim West on ABC's Silver Eagle (1951-55). He was heard on stations in Los Angeles and Palm Springs in the late 1950s and early 60s. For many years he was a popular local radio personality in the New York City area. The NBC chimes, named for the radio and television network on which they have been used, consists of a succession of three distinct pitches: G3, E4, and C4 (middle C), sounded in that order, creating an arpeggiated C-major chord in the second inversion, within about two seconds time, and reverberating for another two or three seconds. The intervals of this progression are up a major 6th from G3 to E4 and down a major third from E4 to C4. The chimes were the first ever audio trademark to be accepted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Contrary to widespread belief, the "G-E-C" sequence is not a reference to the General Electric Company (now a minority shareholder in NBC's current parent company), which did not acquire NBC until 1986; however, GE's radio station WGY in Schenectady, New York was an early NBC affiliate, and GE was an early shareholder in RCA, which founded NBC by creating it as a subsidiary.

With a Jennifer Lopez lookalike seated behind the wheel, a Fiat 500 actually broke down on a Bronx street during the recent filming of a TV commercial purportedly showing the actress driving around the borough in which she grew up.

As seen above (click to enlarge), the Fiat came to a halt during filming in September on East 136th Street in Mott Haven. While two men tinkered with the engine, the J. Lo stand-in sat patiently at the wheel, her face obscured by honey-colored hair styled just like Lopez’s.

The embarrassing breakdown of the sporty Fiat was spotted by journalist Ed Morales, who lives on the Mott Haven block where the commercial was filmed.

Fenneman was born in Beijing, China, the only child of American parents in the import-export business. He was nine months old when his parents moved to San Francisco, California, United States, where he grew up. In 1942 he graduated from San Francisco State College with a degree in speech and drama, and took a job as an announcer with a local radio station. During the Second World War he worked as a broadcast correspondent for the U.S. Office of War Information. In 1946, he moved to Los Angeles and resumed his radio career.
He is most remembered as the announcer and good-natured sidekick on the Groucho Marx comedy/quiz show vehicle, You Bet Your Life, which began in 1947 on radio and moved to television in 1950, where it remained on NBC for 11 years. Fenneman's mellifluous voice, clean-cut good looks, and gentlemanly manner provided the ideal foil for Marx's zany antics and bawdy ad-libs.

The War of the Worlds was an episode of the American radio drama anthology series Mercury Theatre on the Air. It was performed as a Halloween episode of the series on October 30, 1938 and aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. Directed and narrated by Orson Welles, the episode was an adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds.
The first two thirds of the 60-minute broadcast were presented as a series of simulated "news bulletins", which suggested to many listeners that an actual alien invasion by Martians was currently in progress. It was in 1909, when radio & TV newsman Robert Trout was born in rural North Carolina. While with CBS before & after World War 2 Trout became known as the "Iron Man of Radio" for his incredible ability to ad lib, as well as his stamina, composure, and elocution. He died Nov 14, 2000 at age 91. Trout was born Robert Albert Blondheim in Wake County, North Carolina; he added the Trout name early in his radio career. He entered broadcasting in 1931 as an announcer at WJSV, an independent station in Alexandria, Virginia, founded in the early 1920s by James S. Vance. In the summer of 1932 WJSV was acquired by CBS, bringing Trout into the CBS fold. (WJSV is now WFED in Washington D.C.) He was the man who used the on-air label "fireside chat" to regular radio broadcasts of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt during the Great Depression and World War II. (Trout actually credited the genesis of phrase to Harry Butcher, a CBS vice president in Washington.)
Trout was behind the microphone for many of broadcasting's firsts. He was the first to report live congressional hearings, first to transmit from a flying airplane and by some definitions the first to broadcast a daily news program and to create the news anchorman role.
It was Bob Trout in the mid-1930s who passed on to a then-new CBS executive, Edward R. Murrow, the value of addressing the radio audience intimately, as if the announcer was talking to one person. Trout played a key role in Murrow's development as a broadcaster, and the two would remain colleagues until Murrow left the network in 1961, and friends until Murrow's death in 1965.

Radio Moscow was broadcasting (on mediumwave and shortwave) in English, French, German, Italian and Arabic by 1939. Radio Moscow did express concern over the rise of German dictator Adolf Hitler during the 1930s, and its Italian mediumwave service specifically was jammed by an order of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini during the late 1930s.

Early in the 1960's before Beautiful Music radio took off with 24 hour formats, WASH-FM in Washington DC pioneered the Beautiful Music genre with a daily morning program sandwiched into their basic classical music format. Ev Dillard (c1950's photo) was owner manager of WASH and The Commercial Radio Equipment Company. The station was part of the early Continental Radio Network and WQXR network. The promo spot was recorded by one of their early announcers, R A Campbell.

Everett L. Dillard died at the age of 82, June 28, 1988, at his home in Titusville, Florida. Dillard was the former owner of WASH-FM in Washington, which he acquired in 1944, and WDON, an AM station in Wheaton, Maryland which he acquired in 1953. He sold WASH in 1968 to Metromedia, Inc. and WDON in 1974. During the 1940s he also headed the Washington-based Continental FM Network, a 52-station hookup. The Continental Network was Dillard’s & Edwin Howard Armstrong's creation to get some content for Armstrong’s Alpine, NJ, station. Dillard's WASH fed a 15 kHz phone line to Alpine. Some of the content was WASH's evening classical record program. The network “connected” Dillard’s WASH-FM to stations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York (as far west as Buffalo), Connecticut, Massachusetts and ending at Mount Washington, in New Hampshire. Many of the stations picked up the broadcast from the station "down the line" and rebroadcast it, thus allowing the next station "up the line" to pick-up the broadcast and forward it along. He founded the Commercial Radio Equipment Co. in Washington in 1942. During World War II the company sold quartz crystals to the Armed Forces. Later it specialized in radio broadcast equipment sales and consulting. WASH-FM also conducted early experiments with stereo broadcasts. One system was to broadcast one channel over WASH-FM, and the other channel on another of Dillard’s stations, WDON-AM. (1540 Kc Wheaton, MD). R.A. Campbell, who in the early '60s spun classical LPs at WASH-FM and read the news for sister station WDON, shares these details: "The (WDON) AM signal was phone lined (from 11216 Ga. Ave.) to the transmitter building (2647 University Blvd. W.). FM announcers recorded newscasts on an Ampex 601 and fed the AM on cue. Around 4PM I would monitor Don Dillard's cue 'here is Alan Campbell and the news' and I would roll the tape fed down the line to his console which was then on the air to the AM transmitter. (A wire running back at WASH-FM on the side of the FM tower)." Dillard sold WASH-FM in 1968 to Metromedia for $10 million dollars. Soon after the studios and transmitter were moved from Wheaton, MD to Metromedia’s Wisconsin Ave. headquarters. The transmitter was moved to Metromedia’s WTTG-TV transmitter facility and broadcast from the WTTG-TV tower.

A post at gallery2.route56.com indicates Dillard founded Kansas City's first FM station, KOZY, which dates to the pre-war FM band. Dillard, previously founded WLBF (later KCKN). Studios and transmitter were at the Porter Building at 34th and Broadway. Dillard was the experimental licensee of W9XA at 26.45 mHz 1937-39, operating both in AM and FM modes. His first FM station application was submitted to the FCC on March 1, 1940. K49KC was on the air in 1942 at 44.9 mHz. When numeric FM calls were discontinued, Dillard chose the KOZY calls. KOZY moved to 99.9 mHz during the postwar change of the FM band to 88-108 mHz, and then to 98.1 mHz in 1947 when interstation spacing was changed from 0.4 to 0.8 mHz. KOZY went off the air early in 1950 after it lost its lease on studio and transmitter site. Dillard requested deletion for economic reasons, which was granted by the FCC on February 15, 1951.

On this day in 1921, former NBC news host (Today show) & anchor Frank McGee was born in Oklahoma City. He succumbed to bone cancer at age 55. Born in Monroe in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, McGee began his broadcast news career at WKY-TV (now KFOR-TV) in his hometown. In 1955, the owners of WKY purchased WSFA-TV in Montgomery, Alabama, and sent McGee there as news director. WSFA was an affiliate of NBC. As the civil rights movement gained national coverage, McGee's work came to the notice of NBC, which offered him a position with the network. He went on to become "one of television's most prominent newsmen."[1]
McGee was a floor correspondent for the national conventions of both political parties in 1960, 1964, and 1968, one member of the so-called "Four Horsemen" that included NBC newsmen John Chancellor, Edwin Newman, and Sander Vanocur. In 1960, he hosted the second debate between presidential candidates John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. At that time, the debates were considered by the news media to have swung the election in favor of Kennedy.

On this day in 1934, TV journalist Charles Kuralt was born. He is best remembered for the "On the Road with Charles Kuralt" feature pieces for CBS-TV. He died on July 4, 1997. He was most widely known for his long career with CBS, first for his "On the Road" segments on The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, and later as the first anchor of CBS News Sunday Morning, a position he held for fifteen years. Kuralt's "On the Road" segments were recognized twice with personal Peabody Awards. The first, awarded in 1968, cited those segments as heartwarming and "nostalgic vignettes"; in 1975, the award was for his work as a U.S. "bicentennial historian"... his work captured the individuality of the people, the dynamic growth inherent in the area, and ...the rich heritage of this great nation. He shared in a third Peabody awarded to CBS News Sunday Morning. Two years after his death, Kuralt's personal reputation came under scrutiny when a decades-long companionship with a Montana woman named Pat Baker was made public. Kuralt apparently had a second, "shadow" family with Baker while his wife lived in New York City and his daughters from a previous marriage lived on the eastern seaboard. Baker asserted that the house in Montana had been willed to her, a position upheld by the Montana Supreme Court. According to court testimony, Kuralt had met Baker while doing a story on "Pat Baker Park" in Reno, Nevada that Baker had promoted and volunteered to build in 1968. The park was in a low-income area of Reno that had no parks until Baker (née Shannon) promoted her plan. 1925. NBC radio newsman Morgan Beatty was born in Little Rock Arkansas. For many years in the 1940's & 50's in particular, he was a senior news broadcaster for NBC Radio based in New York. "This is Morgan Beatty speaking for Alka Seltzer bringing you news of the world! and the news tonight is..." Morgan Beatty was a newsman on WRC and NBC, covering major events including the elections. When TV arrived he became news anchor for the short-lived Dumont Network. A great radio presence with natural gravitas in his voice, he died July 4 1975 at age 72. When the NBC weekend news service Monitor began on June 12th, 1955 at 4pm, the first hour of the program was simulcast on NBC-TV. That initial June 12 broadcast lasted eight hours, from 4pm through 12 midnight. Following the Monitor beacon, Morgan Beatty was the first voice ever heard on 'Monitor'. After an introduction by Pat Weaver, news headlines by Dave Garroway and a routine by Bob and Ray.

Paul Harvey Aurandt (September 4, 1918 – February 28, 2009), better known as Paul Harvey, was an American radio broadcaster for the ABC Radio Networks. He broadcast News and Comment on weekday mornings and mid-days, and at noon on Saturdays, as well as his famous The Rest of the Story segments. His listening audience was estimated, at its peak, at 24 million people a week. Paul Harvey News was carried on 1,200 radio stations, 400 Armed Forces Network stations and 300 newspapers. His broadcasts and newspaper columns have been reprinted in the Congressional Record more than those of any other commentator. The most noticeable features of Harvey's folksy delivery were his dramatic pauses and quirky intonations. His success with sponsors stemmed from the seamlessness with which he segued from his monologue into reading commercial messages. He explained his relationship with them, saying "I am fiercely loyal to those willing to put their money where my mouth is."

Saul Levine was born in 1926 in Cheboygan, Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan, UC Berkeley, USC Graduate School of Social Work and the University of California School of Law.
He founded KKGO (at first the call letters were KBCA) in 1959, on limited funds, helped greatly by the fact that he was able to buy a used FM transmitter for $1500 from a Michigan station which had gone off the air. The station's original antenna was built in a garage for $300. He cleared brush with a rented tractor on land that he rented from the U.S. Forest Service for $350 a year. Initially, it was a classical station and the first broadcast was a selection from Franz Lehar's Land of Smiles, but they were unable to compete for advertising. As a result the station changed to an all-jazz format and remained as such until 1989 when it converted to classical as a result of KFAC going off the air. In 2007 KKGO became a country music station due to declining revenues. In spite of the fact that the station is now worth $100 million or more, due in part to the fact that the station has an unusually high-powered output owing to its coming into operation prior to 1962 when U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules were introduced limiting the power of radio transmitters, Levine has refused to sell the business saying that his wife doesn't want him sitting around the house all day.

No television personality of the 1950s enjoyed more clout or fame than Godfrey until a famous on-the-air incident undermined his folksy image and triggered a gradual decline; the then-ubiquitous Godfrey helmed two CBS-TV weekly series and a daily 90-minute television mid-morning show through most of the decade but by the early 1960s found himself reduced to hosting an occasional TV special.
